The interesting part was that Jordan’s own billboard had been nearby for years without creating the same kind of commotion. That comparison said plenty about Rodman’s unusual celebrity. Michael Jordan represented polished greatness. Rodman represented something completely different: unpredictability, rebellion, humor, and spectacle.
A Different Kind of Bulls Superstar...
The 1995-96 Bulls already had enough star power to fill an entire sports documentary. Jordan was the global icon, Pippen was one of the NBA’s premier all-around players, and Phil Jackson was running one of the league’s most successful teams. Rodman did not need to become another Michael Jordan.
Instead, he became Dennis Rodman. That turned out to be more than enough. His rebounding, defense, emotional intensity, colorful appearance, and constant interaction with fans made him one of the most recognizable figures of the Bulls’ championship era. The jerseys were just one part of it, but they perfectly captured the relationship Rodman developed with Chicago.
